The turbocharger of the excavator mainly increases the oxygen concentration entering the combustion chamber by compressing air to help the fuel burn fully and provide sufficient power. When the turbocharger is damaged, the excavator will be underpowered and the power will become smaller. Common faults and damages of turbochargers are as follows.

Turbocharger broken shaft

1. Insufficient engine oil lubrication causes bearing wear

▸ Engine oil is the lubricating oil of the turbocharger. When the speed of the turbocharger and the load of the diesel engine increase, the oil supply of the turbocharger lubricating oil also increases accordingly. If the oil supply is insufficient at this time, it will damage the bearing of the turbocharger and even cause the shaft to break;

▸ Lack of engine oil, too low oil level or air inhalation, reduced engine oil pressure, may also cause the turbocharger to be damaged due to lack of lubricating oil;

▸ Whether the engine oil is changed on time every 500 hours. If the engine oil is dirty and the oil fluidity deteriorates, the shaft of the turbocharger will also be worn accordingly.

2. The seal is damaged and the supercharger leaks oil

Troubleshooting method

➤ The turbocharger seal ring and turbine blade seal ring are damaged, the oil cannot be sealed, and the seal ring needs to be replaced.

➤ The wear clearance between the shaft, bearing, and bearing hole is too large, and the oil leaks;

➤ The oil pressure is high;

The supercharger blade is damaged

▸ Is the air filter element original? If so, confirm whether there is any foreign matter entering during replacement; in addition, confirm

Whether there are small parts entering when replacing the supercharger. If the filter element is not replaced or foreign matter in the intake pipe and intercooler is not cleaned up, even if a new turbocharger is replaced, it will cause damage;

▸ Is the turbocharger an original accessory and is there any quality assurance? If it is an original accessory, the possibility of damage should be considered and confirmed from the following factors:

a. Whether the engine oil is original;

b. Whether the engine oil is changed on time every 500 hours. If the engine oil is dirty and the fluidity becomes poor, the shaft of the turbocharger will also be worn accordingly, resulting in blade wear;

c. Whether the engine oil is deteriorated.

▸ Excessive exhaust gas temperature will cause the turbocharger's intermediate shell to overheat, and the turbocharger material will be deformed or corroded; under high load, the turbine blades will crack and break.

‍Maintenance methods of turbochargers

1 Use genuine air filters and engine oil, replace and maintain the excavator on time;

2 When starting the excavator, ensure that it is idle for a long enough time, and accelerate only after the oil pressure stabilizes, so as to ensure that the bearings of the turbocharger are fully lubricated. Similarly, it is also necessary to idle for five minutes before stopping to prevent the turbocharger from wearing;

3 If the working environment is harsh and the dust is relatively large, the air filter needs to be cleaned frequently to prevent debris from depositing;

4 Purchase genuine turbochargers for replacement. If they are not genuine, the intake pressure is too high, and the turbocharger will be worn over time.

The aftermarket or unlabeled ones look the same as the original turbochargers, but the quality of the blades inside is different, and they cannot reach the air pressure that the blades in the original turbocharger can compress.
