Do you know the difference between a piston pump and a gear pump?

Post by BONOVO »

1. Working principle
Piston pump:

Use the reciprocating motion of the plunger to generate pressure and flow.

The plunger is driven to move in the cylinder body by a swash plate or cam.

Usually designed as a variable pump with adjustable displacement.

Gear pump:

Drives the flow of liquid through the meshing rotation of gears.

There is no plunger structure, and the liquid is pushed by the volume change of the gear.

Usually a fixed displacement pump with a fixed displacement.

2. Pressure range
Piston pump:

Can withstand higher working pressure, usually up to 30-50 MPa, suitable for high-pressure demand scenarios.

Gear pump:

The working pressure is relatively low, generally in the range of 10-25 MPa.

3. Efficiency
Piston pump:

Has high volumetric efficiency and mechanical efficiency.

Less energy loss under high pressure conditions, better performance.

Gear pump:

Relatively low efficiency, especially under high pressure conditions, increased internal leakage.

4. Structure and complexity
Piston pump:

Complex structure, high manufacturing and maintenance costs.

High precision requirements, parts (such as plungers, distribution plates) need good sealing.

Gear pump:

Simple structure, low cost, high reliability.

Easy to maintain, suitable for low-cost hydraulic systems.

5. Adjustment capability

Piston pump:

Usually a variable pump, which can adjust flow and pressure according to system requirements.

More suitable for complex and variable working conditions.

Gear pump:

Generally a fixed displacement pump.

Flow regulation needs to be achieved through an additional control valve.

6. Application scenarios

Piston pump:

Applied to high pressure, high precision and variable demand occasions, such as construction machinery (excavators, cranes), aircraft hydraulic systems, and large industrial equipment.

Gear pump:

Applied to medium and low pressure and fixed displacement demand occasions, such as agricultural machinery, forklifts, and small industrial equipment.

7. Durability and life

Piston pump:

More suitable for continuous high pressure use, but high requirements for hydraulic oil quality.

Gear pump:

More resistant to pollution, lower requirements for hydraulic oil quality.

Lifespan is usually shorter
